Seneca Rocks Climbing School - Our Philosophy

Seneca Rocks Climbing School - We believe...

Our History

Seneca Rocks Climbing School has been offering climbing instruction for over 35 years and is the one of the oldest climbing schools on the east coast.  In that time we have taught beginning and experienced climbers alike how to conduct themselves in the safest manner possible while enjoying one of life’s most exhilarating activities.

The Gendarme climbing shop and SRCS Seneca Rocks Climbing School - Arthur and Dianewere founded and run by John Markwell.  Their success and reputation are a testament, not only to John’s vision, but also his hard work and dedication to the local climbing community. In 2004 John decided that hewould like to give retirement a shot and sold the business to Arthur and Diane Kearns of Winchester, VA.

Not to worry, John is still a local fixture and happily stopsby the porch to drink beer and set folks straight.  In this age of homogeny, John is a true treasure and a link to your climbing heritage.

The torch has thus been passed to Arthur (aka ACK) and Diane. They are experienced climbers themselves who also operate a shop in Winchester (Mountain Trails).

Seneca Rocks Climbing School - Diane and ArthurAll of our guides are experienced climbers who strive to provide not only top rate instruction but a fun and enjoyable experience as well.

We believe that a strong foundation is the key to a long and productive climbing career. Through a process of continuity and individualization of curriculum, we ensure that all course work meets the needs and desires of each individual student.

SRCS realizes that  students have different goals as climbers, from top roping to alpine big walls. We will do our best to meet your needs and without sacrificing any of the core essential skills.
